Tokyo Disney crowds in February: weekends and exam season

February gets planned as the quiet winter weekday month. Rank the months with public holidays and school breaks stripped out and February lands at the top instead. The order held when the year changed; the reason has not been found.

We counted all 57 days of February. The month averages Fairly busy against Normal for the year — 1 level apart — yet the raw average sits above the yearly one. Tuesday is the quietest day of the week, Saturday the busiest. Even so, 1 days land below the yearly average.

The table lists the 40 February days still ahead, quietest first. Each level is a value we predicted, not a published attendance figure.

February is not the quiet month

February runs 57 days. It averages Fairly busy; the year averages Normal. Rank the months using plain weekdays only, and February lands at the top.

The same order came back when we changed the year. "Winter is quiet" does not survive contact with February. Crowds by month carries the full ranking.

Is it only the weekend?

By day of the week, Tuesday averages Normal and Saturday averages Busy.

The 41 weekdays average Fairly busy; the 16 weekend days Fairly busy. Weekends run high in every month, so that is not what makes February unusual. What lifts February is the weekdays.

Quietest first: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Crowds by weekday takes the weekday pattern apart on its own.

Why? We still do not know?

The usual explanations are graduation trips and Lunar New Year. We tested both against our own data, and neither accounted for how high February sits.

We do not have an answer for the cause. The result itself, though, did not move when the year changed.

What we have is the ranking. The reason stays unwritten until something actually explains it.

The month splits day by day

The quietest day is Normal, the busiest Packed — 3 steps apart inside one month.

Ahead of today, the quietest is Feb 13 (Sun) at Normal; the busiest is Feb 12 (Sat) at Packed. Below the yearly average: 1 days (2%).

Picking the day beats picking the month. Only 4 of these days are public holidays, so the spread is mostly plain weekdays.

Quieter months do exist

Of the 32 busiest days in the year, 1 (3%) fall in February. The annual peaks sit outside this month.

Still, if you want the weekday floor, February is not where it is. The quiet season names the months that sit lower. Room rates run on their own clock: 37 February nights lean cheap.

Exam-season weekdays

"Exam season is quiet" does not survive a count of plain weekdays. Strip out public holidays, school breaks and weekends and 67 weekdays remain in January and February. In words they land on Normal, the same level as the year, but the average itself sits above it. Only 30 of them — 45% — came in below the yearly average.

What bites is the weekday, not the season

Split those 67 days by weekday: Monday is heaviest at Fairly busy, Wednesday lightest at Normal. Even within "exam-season weekdays", the day you pick moves your level.

The month ranking belongs to the off-season and February crowds. The weekday effect itself is in crowds by weekday, and the season factor that actually pulls the level down is counted in the quiet season.
