📅 [Weekday visitors] Why are all 143 quietest days Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday?

othree / CC BY 2.0

"Monday is the quiet one" is advice you hear a lot. Our crowd levels are ordered to match measured data from queue-times.com, and in that order Monday is the busiest weekday there is. Busier than Sunday.

The quietest days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. Across the 632 days left once public holidays and school breaks are removed, those three all read Fairly easy, Monday Normal, Friday Normal. Every one of the 143 days at the lowest level falls on one of those three. Monday, meanwhile, reads Normal — two levels above those three, and busier than Sunday (Normal).

The bars leave out the 92 days that fall on a public holiday or inside a school break. The order of the weekdays is set to match measured data from queue-times.com, using days where both parks reported. The levels themselves are our forecast, not an attendance figure. The bars are weekday averages, which is why they read Fairly easy; the list below is individual days. 143 days in the year reach the lowest level, Easy, and the list shows the 82 still ahead. They are all equal, so nothing is ranked.

📅 Weekdays come in three kinds, not five!

Monday through Friday is five days. Sort them by how busy they get and only three kinds come out. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday are Fairly easy, Monday is Normal, Friday is Normal. The middle three land on exactly the same level.

So there are three decisions, not five. Take one of those three, avoid Monday, or avoid Friday. Choosing between Tuesday and Wednesday buys you nothing.

🎯 All 143 of the quietest days are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday!?

Count the 143 days at the lowest level by weekday and they all land on those 3 days. Not one Monday or Friday reaches it.

The list below is a set of dates, but the weekday alone is not enough. They cluster into 11 months: May, June, July, August, September, January. The same Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in another month sits a step higher.

The level above holds 163 more days — Sundays first, then Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday. That widens the pool to 306.

The table below turns those levels into minutes. Between a Easy day and the busiest day, the longest queue differs by well over an hour. It is an estimate scaled from a measured snapshot, so read it as a range.

🤔 Is Monday really the quiet one?

Monday is the busiest weekday. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday read Fairly easy; Monday reads Normal. "It is a weekday, so it is quiet" does not hold for Monday.

Saturday reads Normal, only two levels above Monday. In the measured data the two were close enough that we could not separate them.

🔥 Monday is busier than Sunday!

Sunday reads Normal, Monday Normal. The day after the weekend beats the weekend itself. Skip Saturday and Sunday, land on Monday, and you have picked a busier day than the one you avoided.

If the weekend is all you have, there is still a choice. Saturday reads Normal, Sunday Normal — two levels apart. Swapping Saturday for Sunday moves more than choosing between weekdays does. The catch is the night after: room rates climb on a Sunday.

🎒 The weekday still works inside a school break

Everything above excludes public holidays and school breaks. Plenty of people can only travel during one. The order does not change inside them. On break weekdays Monday reads Busy, Tuesday Fairly busy, Wednesday and Thursday Fairly busy, Friday Fairly busy.

The whole band lifts, but Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday at the bottom and Monday at the top stays put. "It is a school break, so every day is the same" is not true. How the three breaks differ is in the holidays article; how the months differ is in the season one.
