🌡️ [Deciding on a season] Are the comfortable months also the quiet ones?

othree / CC BY 2.0

The comfortable months and the quiet months turn out not to be the same months. What is lined up here is temperature only, as long-run normals for each month, not a forecast for your date and not a crowd count. The crowd side belongs elsewhere.

The highest daytime normal falls in August; the lowest night-time normal falls in January. That is 30°C against 1°C — a 29°C spread inside one year. The catch: the months that feel best and the months that run quiet are not the same months. This page lines up 10-year normals, month by month.

Each month is an average of the same calendar days over 10 years. It is a normal for that time of year, not a forecast for any specific date. No crowd data sits behind this page, so no level is quoted on it.

🌡️ The year moves 29°C end to end!

The highest daytime normal is August at 30°C; the lowest night-time normal is January at 1°C.

Top to bottom, that is 29°C. Same place, same open-air day, and that much movement inside one year. Averaging 10 years smooths out any single freak season.

Every number on this page is temperature only. We keep it apart from the crowd data so it is always clear which one is being talked about.

🍃 Only a few months sit in the middle!?

Split the year's range of daytime highs into thirds and keep the middle band: 4 months qualify.

April runs 18°C by day and 10°C at night; May runs 22°C by day and 15°C at night; October runs 21°C by day and 15°C at night; November runs 17°C by day and 9°C at night. You spend the day outdoors, so which band you land in is felt directly.

What we cannot say from this data is that comfort brings the crowd. All that is lined up here is temperature.

🧊 Comfortable month equals quiet month?

This is the point of the page. The temperature ranking and the crowd ranking do not line up.

A month in the middle band is not automatically a quiet month. "Too hot, so it empties" and "too cold, so it empties" do not hold either.

Crowds by month handles which months run high, and the quiet season handles the ones that sit lowest. This page carries no crowd figures at all, so check the level over there.

🌗 One date, morning and afternoon!

Take the gap between the daytime and night-time normal for each month: the widest is March at 9°C, the narrowest August at 5°C.

Judging a month by its name alone loses the evening. If you are staying until closing, the night-time number matters more than the daytime one.

In the wide months a single date reads like two different seasons, morning against afternoon. One averaged line hides that completely.

📌 Normals, not a forecast!

Every number here is an average of the same calendar days across 10 years, smoothed with the days on either side, so no two neighbouring dates jump.

30°C in August is not a promise about your date. Days above the normal and days below it turn up every single year.

Rain or shine cannot be predicted per day, so we do not publish it. Temperature is all we hold.
