Pick the date, then book it β that was our assumption. But the forecast reaches further ahead than anything goes on sale, so the order is probably the other way round: settle the date before the tickets exist.
What you can book and what you can see do not line up. Park tickets are released at 14:00 each day for the same date two months out; Disney hotels open at 11:00 four months before the night. We currently forecast 534 days ahead, but only 62 of those can be ticketed and 123 can be booked. For the remaining 411 days you can see the crowd and reserve nothing.

That gap is the room to work backwards in. Instead of checking once things go on sale, you can shortlist dates before they do.

Once the target date is chosen, the rest is arithmetic. The hotel opens four months before at 11:00; the ticket two months before at 14:00. The room comes first by two whole months.
Tickets are date-specific and popular dates sell out. Re-pick your date after it sells out and only the busy ones are left.
π The further you travel, the more this matters
This part is opinion. If you live nearby, "go on a day that looks quiet" is enough. If you are flying in, the flights and the leave get locked first β the only moment you can still move the date is the earliest one.
At that moment neither the ticket nor the room is on sale yet. That is the whole reason a forecast that reaches further out is worth having.
π§ Date first, then the room, then the ticket
Shortlist with the forecast, book the room four months out, the ticket two months out. Do it in that order and the crowd, the room rate and the ticket price all line up on the same date.
Which dates to target: the season, the weekday, the shape of the holidays. Room rates move on their own axis, so read that one too.
π One worked example
Take the quietest day currently in the forecast β Jul 1 (Thu), Easy. The hotel opens four months before, so Mar 1 (Mon) at 11:00; the ticket two months before, so May 1 (Sat) at 14:00. Both times are Japan time.
Put those two in a calendar and all that is left is showing up. Decide to "get around to booking" without them and the popular dates are already gone.
π Plan the escape route before you need it
This article says to pick the date first, but the forecast is not precise enough to commit to one day. Booking as though it might be wrong is the safer way round.
In practice: check when cancellation charges start before you book. Because the room comes first, the free-cancellation deadline and the ticket release date are what matter. Tickets are tied to a date, and once a date sells out the ones left are the busy ones.
